Trump and Epstein: what the record documents about their relationship, and what remains unverified (1990s-2026)

Case

Trump and Jeffrey Epstein socialized for years before Epstein's 2008 conviction, documented by flight records, photos and Trump's own 2002 praise of him; accounts of why they split differ. Trump is mentioned more than 1,000 times in the roughly 3 million pages DOJ released in January 2026, mostly as references, along with unverified tips and allegations that DOJ calls 'untrue and sensationalist.' Law enforcement has not accused Trump of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, and Trump denies any.

Documented relationship (1990s-2000s)
Trump and Epstein socialized before Trump's presidency and before Epstein's sex-offense conviction, including at parties in Palm Beach and on trips between New York and Florida aboard Epstein's private jet; flight logs document the trips.
Photos from a 1997 Victoria's Secret event and a 2000 Mar-a-Lago event show the two together.
In a 2002 New York Magazine interview, Trump called Epstein a 'terrific guy' and said the two shared an affinity for beautiful women.
A January 2020 message from a federal prosecutor in Manhattan, released in the files, said flight records show Trump 'traveled on Epstein's private jet many more times than previously has been reported'; at least eight flights between 1993 and 1996 included Trump, with Ghislaine Maxwell reportedly on at least four.

How and why it ended: competing accounts
In 2019, after Epstein's arrest, Trump said he was 'not a fan of his' and had not spoken to him in 15 years, pointing to about 2004.
In July 2025, White House communications director Steven Cheung said Trump removed Epstein from Mar-a-Lago for 'being a creep'; Trump said Epstein 'stole' young spa employees, including Virginia Giuffre, and gave no date for the ban.
Other accounts of the split differ: a 2020 book cited an anonymous Mar-a-Lago member saying Trump removed Epstein around October 2007 after he harassed a member's daughter, and a 2019 Washington Post report described a 2004 Palm Beach mansion bidding war that Trump won as a wedge between them.
Giuffre said in 2009, as 'Jane Doe 102,' that Maxwell recruited her at Mar-a-Lago when she was a minor; Social Security records filed in her defamation case show she was a spa locker-room attendant there in summer 2000.

What is in DOJ's released files
Trump is mentioned more than 1,000 times in the roughly 3 million pages DOJ released on Jan. 30, 2026; CNN reported some references are benign and others include newly disclosed unverified sexual assault claims against him.
A June 2021 investigator message reported an image of Trump with Maxwell on Steve Bannon's phone, and in October 2021 federal prosecutors subpoenaed Mar-a-Lago for 'any and all employment records' tied to a redacted person.
A 2011 email chain shows Epstein asking how 'Donald' would respond to a new allegation from a woman who said she worked at Mar-a-Lago, and Maxwell replying, 'I thought you said not to involve Donald'; CNN says the details match Giuffre's account.
A 2013 FBI interview note records Giuffre describing working as a teenager at Mar-a-Lago and being recruited from there.
FBI officials in New York compiled a list of sexual assault allegations related to Trump in August 2025 that was included in the release; CNN reports many appear to come from unverified tips to the FBI's tip line, some secondhand.

Responses and status
On Dec. 23, 2025, DOJ said some documents contain 'untrue and sensationalist claims' about Trump submitted shortly before the 2020 election, and that 'the claims are unfounded and false.'
CNN reports that law enforcement has never accused Trump of wrongdoing related to Epstein and that his appearance in the files does not suggest otherwise; Trump has denied wrongdoing and has said many people were photographed with Epstein innocently.
It is unclear from the released files whether the FBI followed up on the tips about Trump.

(2) The 2003 birthday-letter reporting and Trump's lawsuit over it are not covered here; find primary sources. (3) The Giuffre 2011 email chain is characterized by CNN as matching her account; get the primary document from DOJ's library. (4) Some tips in the files contain further lurid, uncorroborated details; not reproduced here. (6) Allegations against Trump are covered in the separate entry on allegations and responses.

Note
Trump denies wrongdoing and DOJ calls the claims in the files 'unfounded and false'; accounts of why the friendship ended differ (a 2004 property dispute, a 2007 incident, a 2025 spa-staff explanation), and many files record tips whose follow-up is not shown.
