Hegseth's Pentagon spending versus food shortages for deployed sailors

Luxury spending
A government watchdog analysis by Open the Books found the Defense Department under Secretary Pete Hegseth spent more than $93 billion in September 2025 (fiscal year-end) alone, including $6.9 million on lobster tail and $2 million on Alaskan king crab in that single month, plus $7.4 million more on lobster tail spread across March, May, June, and October 2025.
The same September spending included $15.1 million on ribeye steak, $5.3 million on Apple devices including new iPads, $124,000 on ice cream machines, $139,224 on doughnut orders, roughly $100,000 on a Steinway grand piano for the Air Force chief of staff's home, and $225.6 million on furniture.
Just weeks after this spending, in fall 2025, a government shutdown (over a separate healthcare-subsidy dispute) caused millions of Americans to lose SNAP food-assistance benefits - a juxtaposition widely noted in coverage of the Pentagon spending. Hegseth told troops on September 30, 2025 that it was 'completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon.'
Note on framing: Some year-end spending increases reflect a documented federal budgeting incentive - agencies that end a fiscal year with unspent funds risk having their next budget cut, which can pressure spending in September regardless of department leadership. This context does not resolve whether the specific purchases were justified, but is relevant to interpreting the pattern.

$200 billion request amid 'every dollar' framing
In March 2026, the Pentagon requested approximately $200 billion in supplemental funding from Congress for the ongoing Iran war (Operation Epic Fury), on top of funds already allocated via 2025's tax-cuts bill. Asked to justify the figure, Hegseth said: 'I think that number could move. Obviously, it takes money to kill bad guys' and described replenishing 'the arsenal of freedom.'

Documented food shortages for deployed sailors
In April 2026, multiple NPR-affiliate stations reported that U.S. mail service to the Middle East was suspended indefinitely amid reports of food shortages on U.S. warships deployed in the region, with families of sailors expressing fear their family members were going hungry aboard ships including in the Strait of Hormuz area near Iran.
Families specifically alleged both shortages and poor food quality aboard ships including the USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed amid the Iran conflict.

The 'every dollar' claim, verified.
In a January 16, 2026 video posted to X and Facebook, Hegseth said he promised every taxpayer dollar would go toward building the most lethal fighting force on the planet, and separately said he would redirect recovered funds to 'America First priorities.' (Transcript via GovConIntelligence (https://www.govconintelligence.com/p/transcript-secretary-of-war-hegseth)) Reporting from the same period directly undercuts that framing: Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) itemized the $93 billion in year-end 2025 spending as including $3.5 billion for cable TV and $225 million for furniture, on top of the seafood and luxury items above, and said Congress would investigate; Sen. Chuck Schumer called Hegseth 'a true grifter in every sense of the word.' (Finviz/Benzinga (https://finviz.com/news/336082/chuck-schumer-says-pete-hegseth-a-true-grifter-in-every-sense-of-the-world-as-pentagon-spending-hits-93-billion-in-a-month)) Separately reported: a Pentagon makeup studio for televised appearances (initially budgeted at $40,000, scaled back to 'several thousand dollars'), and roughly $40 million in one month on a Guantanamo Bay migrant-detention effort later shut down. (Yahoo/CBS (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pete-hegseth-reportedly-building-makeup-203407128.html); TheWrap/Yahoo (https://www.yahoo.com/news/maddow-mocks-hegseth-wasting-40-213055113.html)) Sen. Richard Blumenthal also raised Hegseth's pre-confirmation financial record, noting two nonprofits he led ran significant deficits, including roughly $434,000 in debt at one by 2009.

The numbers, side by side with the stated goals
Stated goals (per Hegseth's own words): eliminate waste and fraud; direct spending toward lethality and 'America First priorities.'
Documented September 2025 line items within the $93 billion total: lobster tail $6.9 million; Alaskan king crab $2 million; ribeye steak $15.1 million; cable TV $3.5 billion; furniture $225 million; ice cream machines $124,000; doughnut orders $139,224; a grand piano for one official's home ~$100,000; Apple devices/iPads $5.3 million.
Reported separately, outside the September total: roughly $40 million in one month on a Guantanamo Bay migrant-detention effort later shut down, and up to $40,000 (scaled back to several thousand) on a Pentagon makeup studio.
For scale: Sen. Schumer noted the $93 billion single-month total was roughly equivalent to three years of extended ACA tax-credit costs nationwide. The line items above alone total well over $3.8 billion of that month's spending on items unrelated to the stated goals of reducing fraud or building lethality.

Note
Year-end spending spikes are partly a budgeting incentive across government, and the spending and the shortages are documented side by side, not as cause and effect.
