Oil and gas insiders running the energy agencies: Wright, Burgum, and the appointee pipeline

Case

The administration's energy policy is run by people from the industry it regulates or closely tied to it: Energy Secretary Chris Wright (a fracking CEO), Interior Secretary Doug Burgum (close to oil billionaire Harold Hamm), and more than two dozen senior EPA, DOE and Interior officials who came from polluting industries. A former ExxonMobil lawyer now sits in DOJ's environmental division.

Documentation
Chris Wright founded and led Liberty Energy, a roughly $3 billion fracking-services company, before becoming Energy Secretary (confirmed Feb 2025). He has called the renewable transition 'lunacy' and laid out a 'nine-point plan' whose first priority is to 'get out of the way of the production, export and enhancement of our volumes of coal, oil and gas.'
Doug Burgum chairs the National Energy Dominance Council. Hamm's Continental Resources gave $250,000 to Burgum's 2024 presidential campaign, and Burgum has earned up to $50,000 in royalties from Continental's drilling on family land. On April 23, 2025, Burgum met Hamm in Oklahoma City and the same day announced faster permitting on federal lands.
Emails show a Continental employee sent Interior officials a six-page 'roadmap' in June 2025 for getting permits approved despite a court injunction. BLM then granted Continental 71 new well permits in Converse County, Wyoming, using workarounds that avoided the vacated environmental review.
The Senate Democratic report counts 26 senior officials at EPA, DOE and Interior who previously worked for fossil-fuel or other polluting industries.
At EPA, early picks included Nancy Beck, a former American Chemistry Council official with a history of opposing chemical-safety rules.
Robert Levy, a 17-year ExxonMobil senior counsel, joined DOJ's renamed Energy and Natural Resources Division as senior counsel on July 13, 2026.

Perspectives

Official position — Energy Secretary Chris Wright
Wright, who founded and led the fracking-services company Liberty Energy before becoming Energy Secretary, has called the renewable transition "lunacy" and laid out a nine-point plan whose first priority is to get out of the way of the production, export and enhancement of coal, oil and gas, as ProPublica reports.

Critic — Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Democrats
The Democrats' report counts 26 senior officials at EPA, DOE and Interior who previously worked for fossil-fuel or other polluting industries. EHN reported that early EPA picks included Nancy Beck, a former American Chemistry Council official with a history of opposing chemical-safety rules. This is a partisan minority source.

Editorial read — The Author (site author)
The Author's view is that officials who come from the industries they now regulate should step back from decisions that affect former employers and donors. This is interpretation. The entry's own caveat applies: no inspector general or court has found that specific decisions were improperly influenced, and the sources cited here do not record supporters' statements.

Note
Supporters say industry experience makes these officials effective, and no inspector general or court has found specific decisions were improperly influenced.
