Elon Musk: 2024 political spending, DOGE role and ties to the Trump administration

Person

Musk was the largest donor of the 2024 cycle, giving roughly $277-290 million, mostly through his America PAC to back Trump and Republicans. Trump then named him to lead DOGE; he served as a special government employee for about 130 days and left in late May 2025. After a bitter mid-2025 rift over Trump's spending bill, the two reconciled: on Oct. 8, 2026 Trump awarded Musk the National Medal of Science, and Musk is again funding Republicans in the 2026 midterms. His companies (SpaceX, Tesla, xAI, X) hold government contracts and regulatory interests, which critics cite as a conflict of interest.

2024 election spending
Year-end FEC filings show Musk spent more than $290 million on the 2024 election, mostly to boost Trump and Republicans; about a quarter of a billion dollars of it went to America PAC, the super PAC he formed.
An earlier December 2024 count put his giving at $277 million, making him the largest donor of the cycle to either party; $239 million went to America PAC, $10 million to the Senate Leadership Fund and $3 million to the MAHA Alliance PAC.
America PAC funded a swing-state get-out-the-vote operation of door-knocking, texting, calls, mailers and ads; its largest expense was a $40.5 million payment to a company registered shortly before with an address tied to Musk, and participants in its $1 million giveaway have sued, saying it was billed as a lottery, while Musk's lawyers say winners were chosen as paid spokespeople.
Musk said America PAC would aim to be heavily involved in the 2026 midterm elections.

DOGE role (Nov. 2024 - May 2025)
After the election Trump tapped Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with cutting federal spending and regulation.
The Washington Post, as reported by the Boston Globe, noted the loosely defined role could let Musk influence policy and spending decisions that directly affect Tesla and SpaceX.
Musk served as a special government employee, a temporary status limited to 130 days; on May 28-29, 2025 he announced his tenure was over, thanking Trump for the chance to reduce wasteful spending.
Days earlier Musk had criticized Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," saying it increases the budget deficit and undermines DOGE's work.
DOGE's website claimed about $175 billion in savings at his departure, against Musk's earlier claim he could find $2 trillion; later reporting describes DOGE as scaled back, focused on tasks like deleting idle websites and phone lines.

Rift and reconciliation with Trump (2025-2026)
After Musk blasted Trump's tax-and-spending bill in mid-2025, Trump said Musk was lashing out over rolled-back electric-vehicle credits, Musk said Trump appeared in the Epstein files (Trump denies wrongdoing, and appearing in the files does not itself imply any), and Trump threatened to end about $38 billion in government contracts held by Musk's companies.
On Oct. 8, 2026 Trump presented Musk with the National Medal of Science, praising him as a modern-day Thomas Edison; each of the tech executives honored that day had contributed financially to Trump or Republican causes, and Musk was Trump's biggest backer in 2024.

2026 midterm spending
CNN reported Musk is already one of the biggest funders of the 2026 midterms, having put more than $50 million into America PAC and given $10 million each to the main Republican House and Senate super PACs and $10 million to a super PAC active in Kentucky's Senate race.
America PAC's first disclosed 2026 expenditures, roughly $800,000 for printing costs in August, backed House and Senate candidates in several states, including Ken Paxton in Texas.

Perspectives

Official position — Musk and the White House
Musk said his scheduled time as a special government employee had simply come to an end and that DOGE's mission would strengthen over time as it became a way of life across government. A senior White House official said it was never the plan for DOGE's top officials to make careers in government, and Trump said Musk's departure had been planned.

Research notes
Verified Oct. 10, 2026: relationship status (rift in mid-2025, thaw by October 2025, medal on Oct. 8, 2026) and America PAC's 2026 activity. Open leads: America PAC's Q3 report is due Oct. 15, so refresh the midterm totals from FEC filings (one lower-quality source reports about $16.6 million spent by late September, not used here); document SpaceX, Tesla and xAI federal contracts and any regulatory actions affecting them, and trace the $38 billion figure to a primary source; check for reporting on DOGE's data access and Musk's companies' regulators. Whether and why Musk's public positions shifted over time is contested, and no source here establishes a cause.

Note
Musk and the White House presented his DOGE exit as the planned end of a 130-day term, while press accounts describe a falling-out over the spending bill; the details of the rift, including the reported $38 billion contract threat, rest on press reports and the relationship has changed repeatedly.
