Early-voting pressure incidents in October 2026: federal agents seen near polls in Florida, a megaphone confrontation in Las Vegas, and harassment reports in Lewiston, Maine

Case

In the week of Oct. 19-23, 2026, early-voting sites drew several reported pressure incidents. Florida election supervisors flagged Customs and Border Protection vehicles at an early-voting site and asked the FBI to look into possible intimidation; the Leon County supervisor later accepted that the agents were there to vote. In Las Vegas police were called after a woman with a megaphone confronted early voters. In Maine, the secretary of state said DOJ observers are headed to Portland and Lewiston after reports of voter harassment in Lewiston. Each is a separate local incident; none shows a coordinated effort.

Florida: federal agents near early-voting sites
Florida election officials reported spotting federal immigration enforcement at or near two early-voting sites in the week of Oct. 19, 2026, and two county supervisors contacted the FBI over concerns about possible voter intimidation.
On a Monday that week, two Customs and Border Protection vehicles were parked outside the Northeast Branch Library in Tallahassee, Leon County's busiest early-voting location. Supervisor Mark Earley filed a complaint with the FBI because voters might experience intimidation.
Election officials said federal authorities had earlier assured them immigration enforcement would not take place at polling stations.
Earley later said he was satisfied the agents were there to vote early before leaving the state for a work assignment, and described it as an "isolated instance."
Separately, a Key Largo community group posted video of masked, armed federal agents conducting what appeared to be a traffic stop outside the Murray Nelson Government Center, a polling location. Monroe County supervisor Sherri Hodies told Keys Weekly that CBP told her the agents were trying to pull over a suspect who turned toward the government center.
The reports raised concern because a federal law prohibits armed officers or troops near polling places.

Las Vegas: megaphone confrontation at an early-voting site
Las Vegas police were called to the Desert Breeze Community Center on the first day of early voting after a woman with a megaphone shouted at voters and was involved in an altercation with a man leaving the voting center.
The confrontation took place more than 100 feet from the voting center.
Athar Haseebullah of the ACLU of Nevada, called to the site by an election observer, said voter intimidation is not protected expression under the First Amendment. Clark County officials said aggressive behavior is not tolerated at election sites.

Maine: DOJ observers and harassment reports in Lewiston
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said Justice Department observers will be at polling places in Portland and Lewiston alongside party and nonpartisan monitors, and that voter intimidation or interference is a crime for which DOJ monitors will be held to the same standard as anyone else.
The Bangor Daily News reports there have been reports of voter harassment in Lewiston: an employee of the Maine Wire filmed members of the immigrant community at the city clerk's office. The Maine Wire, which the paper describes as a right-wing outlet, alleged that people seeking interpretation help were violating voting rules (a claim, not established).
Lewiston has posted notices that filming or photography, other than selfies, is prohibited at polling locations.

Note
The Florida incident was explained as agents voting early, and the Las Vegas confrontation took place more than 100 feet from the voting center, so whether any of these rose to unlawful intimidation is unresolved.
